Today I sent a letter to Gov. Abbott along with my colleagues from the Central Texas delegation to express our concern with the plan to uniformly resume in-person instruction in our schools this fall as well as the need to waive standardized testing requirements for the next school year. I want to thank my colleagues for their attention and support of this important matter.
Whether or not to reopen schools is a decision that should be made at the local level and one that must be driven by data and science in order to strike the best balance of protecting public health as well as the health of our students and their families, keeping our teachers, support staff, and other educational professionals safe, and upholding our constitutional mandate to educate our children. I continue to hear from families and education professionals about this matter and want to ensure we do not suffer the consequences of reopening our schools too soon.
